Thought this was pretty cool and wanted to share it.

Moravian vs. Muhlenberg: Depending on who you ask, this is a blue-collar vs. upper-class rivalry on a few fronts. Muhlenberg split with other academically prestigious schools and left Moravian and several fellow small Pennsylvania schools behind in the MAC. That this rivalry, amidst coverage of Penn State, Penn, Lehigh, Lafayette and some of the nation's most powerful Division II and III schools, garners any attention at all is a testament to its significance.

Moravian leads the series 33-24-2 (going into 2011 game), but even with two losses in the last three years Muhlenberg had won nine of the last 13 meetings. The home team has won each of the last four years, and the last three games have been decided by a total of 11 points.

"There are donors who tell me they'll give nothing for nine wins, but $1,000 for a win over Moravian," quipped Muhlenberg coach Mike Donnelly.

"Hatred might be a strong word, but it's definitely a rivalry game," added first-year Moravian coach Jeff Pukszyn, a former Greyhound who played three times against the Mules and coached in another 14 as an assistant under Scot Dapp. "We certainly feel different toward each other as opposed to other teams."

Muhlenberg (6-3, 6-2) is already assured of its 12th non-losing season in Donnelly's 15 years, but "a loss changes our season entirely; we'd look at it completely different," said fifth-year senior Pat McDonough.

Meanwhile, Moravian (2-7, 2-6) seeks to avoid its second two-win season in three years.

"It definitely would be a great way to go out," Greyhounds senior defensive lineman Seth Payne said.

2009 may have been a rebuilding year for both the Muhlenberg and Moravian football teams, but a win in a rivalry game to close out the season can turn a disappointing season into a memorable one.

The Mules (3-7, 2-6) did just that at Scotty Wood Stadium, defeating their Lehigh Valley rivals 7-0 in a defensive battle.

“This was the season for us,” said senior Jake Floyd. “Getting a win today makes the whole season feel worth it and definitely makes it a success.”

The defense was the key to success against the Greyhounds (2-8, 2-6). Muhlenberg held Moravian to just 39 yards on the ground and 146 yards of total offense. The Mules recorded nine sacks, five more than their next highest total in a game all season. Junior Andy Curley had 2.5 of those sacks to go along with seven tackles en route to earning the Bianco Award as Muhlenberg’s Most Valuable Player of the game.

2011: Mules shut out rival Moravian 28-0

"We've got nine seniors who start on our defense," McDonough said after he helped the Mules shut out archrival Moravian, 28-0. "We were full of emotion all day. We wanted it. The goose egg was really nice and this is a great way to go out."

Muhlenberg dominated the Centennial Conference and season finale for both teams at sun-splashed Scotty Wood Stadium, limiting Moravian to 139 yards of offense, forcing four turnovers and scoring a defensive touchdown.

Coach Mike Donnelly's Mules end their campaign with a 7-3 overall and a 7-2 conference record. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds, under first-year coach Jeff Pukszyn, finish 2-8 and 2-7.

"It's a great rivalry," said Donnelly, whose squad was on the losing end of a 14-13 thriller last season. "This makes up for last year. Of course, next year we go over there and they'll probably win. But today was a great win for our team."

Though running back Terrence Dandridge rushed for 126 yards and was named the team's game MVP, Muhlenberg's defense, led by McDonough, was the story of meeting No. 60.

A linebacker, McDonough made 10 tackles and recovered a fumble. Senior defensive end Kenneth Cobb made six tackles, had two sacks and forced two fumbles. Senior cornerback Chris Hartzell also contributed a key play, returning an interception 34 yards for a second-quarter touchdown.

The closest Moravian came to scoring against the Mules' 'D' was when it took over at the 14-yard-line with two minutes remaining before intermission. However, a penalty pushed the Greyhounds back and they failed on a fourth-and-20 play from Muhlenberg's 24.
