Merrimack

Back-to-back PL champs 2016 and 2017.... but need to get back to relevance in the national FCS scene.

Merrimack

Post by Hawkineer » Mon Feb 04, 2019 9:24 pm

ESU or Kutztown would have generated more interest. Yeah, I know MC is moving to FCS. ;) This is turning out to be one weird schedule.

This better be a 50 point laugher. MERRIMACK? :D

Lol this feels like a game that’s just to good to be true, but we will see. Hopefully we don’t find a way to not blow them out

Merrimack is going to come into this game looking to make a Program statement!

I think this will be a game that will be closely "Monitor"-ed!

We'll have to monitor that possibility.

D2 teams IMO aren't that much worse than DI-AA teams on an individual game basis, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility Merrimack could upset Lehigh. On the other hand, Merrimack was roughly an average or slightly below average D2 team in one of the weakest D2 leagues (the Northeast 10) the last few years, so this is a game the Mountain Hawks should win easily if they are focused. It won't be like playing Long Island (i.e. LIU Post), the other NE-10 team moving up to DI-AA; LIU Post has been pretty good in recent years.

Incidentally, it appears the Merrimack game will be the Lehigh game I attend this year as part of my September/early October family visit. Assuming Lafayette schedules their early season home games at 6 PM like they have done in recent years, I'll probably attend Merrimack/Lehigh at 12:30 PM and Penn/Lafayette at 6 PM on Saturday 9/28.

Not to be too negative, but my guess is there were DII teams that could have beaten LU last year and maybe the year before.

We've lost to some really bad teams over the years.

No time to gloat with a new coach and lots of new players.

I remember back 'my day' we played "Post", then known as "C.W. Post". They actually had a very good QB that got a shot in the pros, but cannot recall his name. Tall guy with a strong arm. We beat them , but it wasn't a walkover.

The idea of playing a lower division team to start a season, after several not so good years takes me back to the fall of 1967. Fred Dunlap had won one game in his first two years at Lehigh. 0-9 in 1966, 1-8 in 1965. Ithaca College was scheduled for the opening game of '67. That Saturday I was a high school senior on campus for my Lehigh interview and took in the game with my parents, expecting a blowout Lehigh win against tiny Ithaca. 20-0 Ithaca at the half. Yipes!

As it turned out, Lehigh scored 50 unanswered points in the second half for their only win of the year. And the turn around began. But taking an underdog lower division opponent lightly can be dangerous. They have nothing to lose.
