How a Spring Patriot League Schedule Could Work

Back-to-back PL champs 2016 and 2017.... but need to get back to relevance in the national FCS scene.

How a Spring Patriot League Schedule Could Work

Post by lfnadmin » Wed Nov 18, 2020 10:24 am

Problem: Patriot League schools want to have zero overnight stays and have all the games done via bus rides.

Solution: Play far-flung Holy Cross and Georgetown home games either in Patriot League or Ivy League venues.

Here's how it could work and all the games would be bus rides.

Holy Cross would have to bus to the Bronx a lot, to play most of its games because home games vs. Lehigh and Bucknell are overnight stays. I had those games played in the Bronx so it is a bus ride for both teams.

I tried to minimize doubleheaders and ended up only with two of them, both on FieldTurf fields.

February 27th

Georgetown at Fordham, Coffey Field, Bronx, NY
Lehigh vs. Holy Cross, Coffey Field, Bronx, NY (doubleheader) *
Lafayette at Colgate, Andy Kerr Stadium, Hamilton, NY (late start, 2PM or later, to avoid overnight stay)
Bucknell BYE

March 6th

Fordham at Lafayette, Fisher Field, Easton, PA
Bucknell vs. Holy Cross, Coffey Field, Bronx, NY *
Georgetown vs. Colgate, either at Coffey Field, Bronx, NY OR Fisher Field, Easton PA (doubleheader)**
Lehigh BYE

March 13th

Holy Cross vs. Lafayette, Coffey Field, Bronx, NY *
Colgate vs. Bucknell, Coffey Field, Bronx (doubleheader) OR Fisher Field, Easton, PA *
Fordham at Lehigh at Murray Goodman Stadium, Bethelehem, PA
Georgetown BYE

March 20th

Fordham at Bucknell, Matthewson Stadium, Lewisburg, PA
Colgate vs. Lehigh at Fisher Field, Easton PA (this needs to be done because it likely will be a late start game that needs lights)
Holy Cross vs. Georgetown, Coffey Field, Bronx, NY *
Lafayette BYE

March 27th

Lehigh at Georgetown, Cooper Field, Georgetown, DC
Lafayette at Bucknell, Matthewson Stadium, Lewisburg, PA
Holy Cross at Colgate, Andy Kerr Stadium, Hamilton, NY (late start time?)
Fordham BYE

April 3rd

Bucknell at Lehigh, Murray Goodman Stadium, Bethlehem, PA
Georgetown at Lafayette, Fisher Field, Easton, PA
Colgate at Fordham, Coffey Field, Bronx, NY
Holy Cross BYE

April 10th

Lehigh at Lafayette, 156th meeting, Fisher Field, Easton, PA
Bucknell at Georgetown, Cooper Field, Georgetown, DC
Fordham at Holy Cross, Ram-Crusader Cup, Fitton Field, Worcester, MA
Colgate BYE

April 17th Makeup games if necessary

Notes

* Could be relocated to Wien Stadium, Upper Manhattan (Columbia)
** Could be relocated to Princeton Stadium Princeton, NJ

Certainly doable and practical. Will Chesney go along with no home games?
With any luck vaccines may possibly become available in April for college students. A remote wild card at best but I really want some PL football. ;)

Might the Colgate-Georgetown game be at Bucknell. May be more central

The Mar 20 Lehigh - Colgate game is after Daylight time. So Sunset is at 7:00PM. A 3:00 start would be OK.

But essentially good job

I'm not sure why a lot of neutral site games are required. The PL basketball schedule has 11 overnight stays, so the league is clearly OK with that when it is really necessary.

Also, although it would be a long day, HC is a 4-hour bus ride from Lafayette and Colgate. If one of those were home and one away, it could be done with no overnight stays - although a long bus ride. In the old ECC days, Bucknell used to have eight hours on the bus in one day when they played Hofstra. They survived each year.

Good job on the proposed schedule!

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to how likely a spring season would be?

This realist sees it as 50-50 or worse ... For the players' sake, I hope I'm wrong.

Today. The PFL endorsed a 6 game sched with member schools allowed to schedule OOC games at their discretion. A hopeful sign for Spring.
A vaccine by January would start 21 off quite well. :D

That's interesting about Gate/GTown at Bucknell and would mean there would only be one "doubleheader". And if a 3PM kick on March 20th works at Goodman that's even better. Even fewer logistical problems and headaches.

Fordham would have to do the most heavy lifting of all the schools because they'd be hosting a lot of Holy Cross games. Alternatively it's also possible Lehigh and Holy Cross could meet in Hamilton as a "halfway" point, but it would have to be a different day than the Lafayette/Colgate game.

The 7:00 PM was a back of the envelope. Checking the Table, it is Actually 7:13 So, unless there is a lightening storm, or like 7 OTs, Dark should not be a problem with a 3:00 PM start. Actually about 5 minutes more daylight than an Nov 20, 12:37 KO for Lehi-Laf 157

Question. If mortal fans are not allowed to attend Leh-Laf 156, can we still count it towards 50 games?

Question - If a football game was played and no one saw it...did it really happen?
