Football coaches of all stripes go to clinics and learn all bout techniques, philosophy, strategy, etc. One who decides to get into the college coaching game has to realize they have to learn about all the positions. If you check out our staffs over the years, many have changed from coaching certain positions to others. Recruiting has, obviously, become huge. Schools in the PL are selling a different type of product from most other conferences. Being able to identify quality football talent AND a strong academic base is not easy. The football part is not brain surgery. I think we over-think many times and sometimes out-think ourselves. There are a lot of "intangibles" that go into being a good or great coach. As a 'stepping stone' school, Lehigh HC's live with their Lists in the upper right drawer of their desks of potential assistants to plug into a sudden opening.
