Matt Logie

Young team returns in 2018-2019 with tons of promise. Can they get back to the NCAA Tournament?

Just announced as the new coach at D2 Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego. They had a very good season and their coach left for the top job at Idaho State. With the success he has had at the D3 level, I'm surprised he hasn't landed some D1 job by now.

Seems like a good spot for him. Coming into a winning situation at a higher level is rare - usually the programs willing to take a shot on a coach from a lower division are coming off a poor season. Clearly not the case here.

If he can keep winning games at PLN, he will be well positioned to move to the Big West or WCC. Or back east if a certain opportunity presented itself...

It could be a great opportunity - but also could be a trap. PLN had a sensational season - their best ever - and was national runner-up. However they graduate four starters. And the fifth (Hommes), who was national D2 POY, has declared for the NBA draft. He will probably withdraw his name before the deadline - but if he doesn't, PLN could be in line for a dramatic dropoff. Hommes averaged 31.4 ppg btw. Even with him, they likely will be significantly worse.

I'd hire Logie or Kroogs as HC, right now. I'm done with the professor-as-coach model - it hasn't worked. Let's get a basketball mind in place. We've completely squandered some our best teams ever in the past 6 years or so.
