CJ - unreal

Young team returns in 2018-2019 with tons of promise. Can they get back to the NCAA Tournament?

Oh my, yes, Lehigh played Carlisle on Taylor Field in 1912, before the concrete stadium was built. A tremendous crowd attended as Carlisle was ranked #1 in country and set to play the other undefeated team in the country, Army, the following week. Lehigh was ranked in the top ten, with All-American (our ONLY football player in the NCAA HOF) Pat Pazetti at QB. There are a number of pages in "Jim Thorpe All-American" book I read as a kid describing the game. Midway through the game Carlisle was up by only a few points with LU driving inside the 20 when Thorpe intecepted a Pazetti pass and took it back for TD that shifted the momentum. Carlisle won something like 34-14. Following week was their great game against Army, whose team included Eisenhower (I think MacArthur was the team manager)they won 27-6 to remain undefeated. However, they were upset by Penn the following week 34-26 at Franklin Field They finished the season 12-1-1 (with a 0-0 tie with Washington & Jefferson--must have been a rain game!). They outscored their opponents that year 454-120. Pop Warner was Carlisle's coach.
The following year, Carlisle came to Taylor, again, winning 21-7, on the way to a 10-1-1 record. They outscored opponents 296-53 that year. Lehigh was the first and only team in the first six games to score on them.

You' of course, are correct. My research skills suck lately :-). Interestingly, Thorpe was 25 when that game was played, had already won his gold medal and had signed a minor league baseball contract 2 years earlier. I guess things were different then.

Thorpe had left Carlisle and returned to the Reservation in OK for a couple years before returning for his final two. I think when Pazetti played at Lehigh, we were ranked in the top 10 by some "Gazette" that pretty much did the rankings back then. That is how Laughyette claims their "national titles", based upon a "poll" by a couple cigar chomping sports writers. The Leotards have never WON a national title....

My 9 year old granddaughter frequently pipes up at dinner or whenever we are gathered and the conversation shifts to sports and inevitably the gridiron, "With Granddad, it always comes back to football."

Yup. I do know there are other sports. And I root for our teams in them. But, there is only one really important sport, football. Gave my 3 yr old granddaughter a tiny furry football to the dismay of my daughter-in-law. :)
I have been told I'm a mite incorrigible on the subject. :D
