Luke Traina ‘20

Young team returns in 2018-2019 with tons of promise. Can they get back to the NCAA Tournament?

Traina joins as a PWO. Most of the schools you see on his 247 are just unofficial visits he took, although his VC is wrong too and he did indeed have more than 1 offer. I'm good friends with his hs coach. He stopped using the recruiting service in 9th grade when he starting gaining attention. Kid can play though... will be a great addition for us. Spectacular kid as well.

Question I've had for a long time: Can a walk-on receive need based financial aid? Turning down an athletic scholarship from one school to pay full ride at a school like Lehigh seems like quite a sacrifice, if need based aid is not allowed.

It depends. If a walk-on was "recruited", based on the NCAA definition, then virtually any financial aid makes him a counter. If he was not recruited, then he may not be a counter. The NCAA definition has been loosened a bit. To be a "recruit", the player must have (1) made an official visit; or (2) had an in-person meeting with a coach off campus (or had a family member have such a meeting; or (3) received an written offer of athletically related financial aid. Note that this may allow need-based aid - but it must be the normal amount that a non-athlete in the same financial situation would receive, with the normal distribution between grants and loans.

It is rare for an athlete to commit as a preferred walk-on at this time of year when there are still many possibilities of getting a full ride.

While a preferred walk on cannot receive athletic $$, they can(and most of the time do) receive academic $$ or merit scholarships. Preferred walk on’s also get admissions assistance. Traina’s mom is legacy...

Fwiw, per NCAA rules, preferred walk-ons can only be granted academic scholarships or merit scholarships if they qualify on the same basis as any non-athlete.

As a PWO, Luke will have an uphill battle for PT but based on this article, Lehigh is getting a super young man
