American (1/1, road)

Young team returns in 2018-2019 with tons of promise. Can they get back to the NCAA Tournament?

American (1/1, road)

Post by CHIP72 » Sat Jan 01, 2022 7:02 pm

I just attended Lehigh's game at American, and all I can say is "what a strange game but great win for the Mountain Hawks". In bullet point form:

*Close game early

*AU goes on 21-1 run (included 18-0 run) to take a 19 point lead at 30-11; Lehigh held scoreless for 7+ minutes.

*LU starts their comeback but still trails by 9 points (35-26) at halftime.

*The Mountain Hawks finish their comeback and take their first 2nd half lead (42-40) with 13 1/2 minutes left in the 2nd half.

*After exchanging the lead a few times, Lehigh builds an 8 point lead (57-49) with 8+ minutes left as they got hot from the field.

*The Eagles come back to cut the deficit to 1 point (62-61) with 18 seconds left as the Mountain Hawks go cold (again).

*After making the front end of a 1-and-1, Lehigh forces an AU miss in the paint at the buzzer and holds on for a 63-61 victory.

Free throw shooting was a key factor; Lehigh went 8 for 10 from the line while American was only 6 for 15 from the charity stripe.

Crazy but great win for Lehigh. Evan Taylor led all scorers with 25 points (10-16 from the field) and tied for the team lead with 6 rebounds. Keith Higgins added 13 points and 3 steals, and Nic Lynch chipped in with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

FWIW, Lehigh is now 2-0 in originally scheduled games against D1 teams that I've attended and 0-9 in such games that I haven't attended. (I also went to the game at Maryland this past Tuesday.)

Sounds like you need to go to the vast majority of PL games! Thanks for the recap.

Great update. Didn’t see game so looking at a dry box score.

I was questioning a bit the rotation which has now changed dramatically. Curious to everyone’s thought on what should be PL rotation?

Starters got very heavy minutes. No problem with that. Seems like Parolin is buried (now first big off bench after starting) and Knostman has gone from starter to now 2 min. He’s dropped to 3rd PG. I question Betlow getting 17 min. He’s only there to shoot 3 and zero attempts. Alamudun also only 2 min. Fenton still starting, 0-5 from field. He’s been in and out of starting lineup. In that grouping, need to find consistent shooting from somebody. 24% from 3 today. I guess MW will return and suck up a bunch of minutes.

I noticed that AU was missing three starters, including All-PL Stacy Beckton, plus two rotation subs. Any idea whether covid or injury?

FWIW, I plan to attend two more Lehigh games this season:

02/20 (Sun): at Loyola (MD)
02/26 (Sat): at Lafayette

There's a chance I may also attend the Wednesday 1/19 game at Navy. Also, if Lehigh plays at American during the PL Tournament, or possibly at Navy or Loyola in the PL Tournament semifinals, I probably will attend that game/those games as well.

EDIT: Corrected date for Lehigh at Navy game.
