How KenPom Sees It

ARKANSAS STATE (1-4 in D-1) ranked 292nd out of Big South
@
LU (4-2) ranked 142nd out of PL
LEHIGH wins by 1 (84-71) 87% chance
Can only assume much of KP’s thinking is based on the teams’ relative Out of Conference Schedule of Schedules which tips in LU’s favor (109th to 208th).

Odds and Ends

Around the PL on Friday and Saturday
Friday
Colgate at South Florida
Wagner at American
Saturday
Mount St. Mary’s at Loyola MD

Same Opponent Comparative Scores
Last Week, I made mention of the fact that recently (2 weeks ago) 3 PL schools travel to the same opponent in what was a six-day window of time. It happened when HC, LU and CU all took to the road to play Siena. For those who believe in comparative scores when judging strength, here are the outcomes:
HC by 12 (57- 45)
LU by 11 (80 – 69)
CU by 5 (84 – 79)

One-man Show

While viewing the Arkansas State game, checkout the visitor wearing “0.” His name is Ty Cockfield, a 6’0” / 185 lb. Guard, who’s 2018-19 Stat Line reads as follows: 19.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and 2.5 apg. He’ll be hard to miss, in that he plays 80% of the minutes and takes 28% of the team’s shots. They win (Gardner-Webb and Missouri Baptist) when he records 30% or more of the team points. He’s particular adept from inside the arc (.617 or 29 of 47), but also not afraid to let is go from deep (8 of 18 for .444%). When not shooting, there’s a good chance he’ll be making the assist, logging 19.4% of the team helpers. He should be a challenge and fun to watch.

Arkansas Roadmap
I can’t remember when a team will have traveled so far as Arkansas State will this weekend to take on the Mountain Hawks. Perhaps someone can come up with a longer trip, if there really was one. To be exact, the distance between our two campuses is 1,045 miles. And, the funny thing is, it’s not the farthest Arkansas State will travel this year to take on an opponent. For one, there’s a date up in Syracuse to play the Orangemen and (presumably) take home a pile of money. And. these guys have already journeyed to Texas, Arizona, and North Carolina, and will hit: Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and New York before opening on Big South play on the road in Louisiana. That pay day up in Syracuse had better be a big one to cover upcoming travel expenses.
Of course, this weekend’s match-up with The Red Wolves of Arkansas State doesn’t come completely ‘out of the blue,’ knowing the Red Wolves hosted the Mountain Hawks two years ago in what we’ll all remember as Kahron Ross’ Homecoming Game. Now, it’s our turn to pay thanks to them for the visit. Hopefully, Kyle Leufroy, Pat Andree and Jordan Cohen (the only three remaining from that November ’16 game) will remember the encounter and the ugly 97-89 loss – a game in which The Red Wolves put up 58 first half points. Oh yeah, Pat was held scoreless. Redemption time Saturday and a “W” for Kahron – albeit a bit late.

American
7th in the pre-season polls, The Eagles are off to a torrid 4-1 start (could be 5-1 with a win on Friday) behind the dynamic duo of PG Sa’eed Nelson, Pre-Season Player of the Year, and PF Sam Iorio. Four of their last six OOC games are at home and they open up the PL run at Bender against BU. Oh yeah, Sam Iorio hails from Allentown, PA.

Bucknell

The Bison, losers by 18 at home to Northeastern, take on Monmouth this weekend – again at home - before heading on the road for four to complete their OOC play. And, they begin PL play with two on the road, as well. Perhaps that’s all good news, since the team has yet to post a “W” at Sojka this year.

Actually BU goes on the road for six consecutive games: LaSalle, Ohio State, St. Mary's (California). URI, plus two more at the Diamond Head Classic. Last two are from a group including TCU, Colorado, Charlotte, UNLV, Indiana State, and Hawaii.

I don't think Sojka is the problem. Two of the three home losses came while Sestina was out with an injury. With him in the lineup, they would have won at least one of those games and maybe two.

A sweep for PL today.
This was a very nice team W. 82-70. Fun. Hectic switching between this and Gate vs JMU. Gate won

Caught a bit of GaTech St.Johns Alston started scored 14 pts . Led Tech to a strong 1st half.

Sounds like LU played well.

Alston ever score as many as 14 for LU?

Seems like the Mountain Hawks have a lot of balance so that no opponent can focus on stopping just one or two players. With the young centers improving over time, this could be a very promising season.

ngineer is so right when he speaks of balanced scoring. You simply can't get more balance than what you see studying the 7 game stat lines of KL and PA. See below.....

mpg...fg%...3fg%...pts...ppg avg

KL: 29.6....590.....567....103...14.7
PA: 28.9....486.....512....103...14.7

Throw in ppg numbers of 10.6 and 9.7 for JC and LT, respectively, and 11.6 from our combo centers, JK and NL, and you've got balance like seldow seen.
