Game 13/2 - Loyola

Young team returns in 2018-2019 with tons of promise. Can they get back to the NCAA Tournament?

Need as much bench as we can get. Two tough road games coming up. Real measuring sticks in terms of PL placement.

Foley looked shaky his first action earlier in the year but seemed more composed on Saturday. I think MW has a better handle, but hopefully Joe gains confidence with more floor time.

In my humble opinion, the best things about yesterday’s win would be that………

1. We won, as we should have. Now 2 and 0, we sit atop the League with W’s – each at home - over LC and LOM, teams ranked 9 and 10th in the Pre-season Poll. We share to the top spot with Navy after a pair of “surprise” W’s against CU and HC – teams ranked 3rd and 5th, respectively, in Pre-season Poll. Like us, Navy did it at home both times. For those who like to keep track of such things, the home teams are 8 and 2 going into play later this week.

2. Karnick seemed to have a plan before and after every touch of the ball. His hesitation, ear-marking early play, was all but gone.

3. With less than a minute to play, Joe Foley (Scholarship/Freshman) brings the ball up and spots Sophomore/Walk-on Shawn Acoveno in the key for an easy bucket to close out the game. Moments earlier, Coach Reed had cleared the bench to get everyone some playing time. With Acoveno’s bucket, the 7 players on the bench erupt in excitement as if the team had just won a league title. It’s heart-warming to see a non-schollie score a bucket, knowing the work he and others put in daily behind the scene and on the practice court. Add to that the fact that Acoveno was quoted earlier in the season when asked, “What your favorite thing about Lehigh?” His response: “Being a part of the basketball team.” Gotta love it!

4. Coach Reed, whether the team was down by 10 or up by 10, would always find time for a “teaching moment” with his player(s). It happened again and again yesterday along the bench and sidelines.

Is Foley a scholarship player? I always thought he was a walk-on, and that is what Verbal Commits lists him as.

Is scholarship or non-scholarship status public information?

Often it is, based on the school's press releases. Also you can often tell based on tweets and articles when the player commits. I know when he committed that the general feeling on this site seemed to be that he was a walk-on, but I don't know if it was ever confirmed.

Obviously the NCAA knows. I don't know, but it may be that Lehigh has a policy not to make a distinction. I've never heard of a basketball walk-on earning a scholarship here. It may have happened, but I've never seen it announced as such.

These next two games are huge. Honestly. I would be happy if we came away with one or two. Two very hard places to play. Holy cross worries me more with their defense. And holding teams to low scoring games. They are very underrated. Any win on the road is huge. Let’s hope for one of two. 2 would be great

Sorry for ceating such a dialog on his scholatship status of Foley. I may have made an innacurate assumption. I was merely trying to point out the excitement generated by Acoveno - truly a "walk-on."
