Obviously you don't need to have a Doctorate to be an AD. But I suspect the faculty would not allow the term Dean of Athletics, to someone lacking a doctorate.
I would rather have an excellent AD with jut a Bachelors degree, than a mediocre one with a PhD.
But prestige is nice

Maybe that's why I heard that Joe is planning retirement in three years. That gives her time to get the degree if needed.
