2019-20 Season

Post by ngineer » Thu Sep 12, 2019 1:49 pm

The wrestling season unofficially opened this past Sunday with the annual Wrestling Club Picnic attended by 160 including all wrestlers and their families. A great opportunity to meet, mingle and play various games (quoits, horseshoes, corn hole and bocce ball) along with great food to get to know these kids. I am very optimistic about the coming season. Of course, we were last year at this time and we know the injury bug can change things. But you have to deal with what your dealt and I see this year's team having at least 4 All-Americans at NCAAs and the potential if certain guys reach their potential of 6-7. A few weight classes will have spirited competition for the starter position(133, 141 and 165). 125 seems to have an early favorite, but two other guys there can make it interesting. 149,157,174,184, 197 and 285 all appear to have strong starters barring any injury bugs. Lehigh's upper weights this year could be areal 'Murderer's Row'. Still awaiting the South Beach Dual team assignments before they can issue the offical schedule, but what's assembled thus far is excellent with home matches verus: Okie State, Penn State, Navy, Arizona State. OSU and PSU will be at Stabler Arena.

A healthy team would be the best change of pace. Very optimistic going in.

Looks like you can put 149 in the "up for grabs" column.

Hoffman has claimed 149, just my opinion.... he looks considerably stronger and more balanced in all three positions....

To some extent I'm deferring to Wally's info in his newsletter that Karam had surgery early this year and isn't in top form. For the rest, I'm looking at his impressive high school record as well as his LU record before he got injured.

I think Hoffman has this position until Karam gets better. Likely not near 100%, so by the time he is, Hoffman has the opportunity to be "the man" at 149 and if he does well may not be unseated. Karam is a great mat wrestler, but in college you have to be very good on your feet if you plan to get on any podiums. I hope he gets better, but for now, I don't see any competition at 149.
