South Beach Duals

Post by whiz wit » Mon Dec 09, 2019 1:40 pm

Seems to be "official" that LU will be facing Duke, Missouri & Minnesota. Last season they wrestled four duals. Wrestlestat has LU shutting out Duke, which isn't the level of competition one would expect LU to schedule if there was a better alternative. Also seem to recall a couple of strong teams initially committing to SB and then pulling a switcheroo to the Scuffle. Wonder if this young tournament is already losing steam.

Cornell posted pictures of their wrestlers frolicking on the beach so Lehigh thought it would be a good idea to ditch the Midlands and Scuffle. Turns out it's a Mickey Mouse event with duals held in high school gyms and zero coverage. Hope this is the last year LU attends.

What South Beach has that other duals tournaments don't is the individual matchups that can be scheduled on short notice. That way if you bring 15 or 18 guys for three duals, the guys who don't compete in the duals can still get some live matches. And it's not likely that the event will be snowed out.

But yeah, having three of the four teams that we planned on wrestling pulling out isn't going to leave a good taste in anyone's mouth.

Scuffle allows teams multiple entries at every weight so there's that. Lehigh has convinced themselves that holiday tournaments are the cause of injuries which of course is not true.

What's your data on that?

One of the years I as helping run the Scuffle, I happened to be down in the corner where they put the medical area when Jack and the Cornell and Edinboro trainers were having a discussion similar to the one in Jaws when Quint and Hooper were trading injury stories.

Of course data would be helpful but to my knowledge Lehigh pulled out of the holiday tournaments without any. Since teams practice October - March almost every day it's logical to assume most injuries occur during practice.

the cause of injuries
That wasn't your initial argument but again this is without a hint of data. You initially said those tournaments weren't the cause of injury as opposed to most of them.
But do practices cause most injuries? Although they obviously practice more days than they compete, a good amount of practice consists of warming up and cooling down and other conditioning exercises. Plus drilling and what's called play wrestling and most live wrestling is not done at the same intensity level as during competition so there's not a pure linear aspect to injuries based on the number of days done. It might be overall as all wrestlers practice and not all compete.

Practices last a minimum of 1 hr., matches are 7 minutes. Certainly at some point during every practice, match intensity is equaled or surpassed. My long ago experience was far more injuries occurred during practice.

This will be the 3rd or 4th year of South Beach Duals....only the first one was held in a High School Gym and featured 4 teams. I attended last year's event, held at the Ft Lauderdale Civic center....a very large, first class facility. There were 16 NCAA teams and more HS teams on at least 16 mats.
Sight lines were excellent and seating very comfortable. Plenty of free parking and accessible to South Florida highways.
The only downer at last year's event were the injuries we endured....Karam and Jaret Lane
As a fan, I much prefer duals to tournaments....much easier to follow the action

BTW, the South Beach Duals website still lists the teams that have withdrawn as attending.
