Arizona State Preview

Post by Oracle » Tue Feb 18, 2020 9:43 am

it is not my intention to disrespect UPenn as they have a few very good wrestlers but in the end, it doesn't feel like a close dual so let's skip over to the main event in Leeman-Turner Arena in Grace Hall vs IM dual #4 Arizona State.

Lehigh has handily beaten the Sun devils the past 2 years--Zeke Jones is hoping the 3rd time will be the charm. Zeke knows recruiting the east is necessary for his program so he doesn't mind coming here one bit. This dual will be very intriguing as ASU has 5 guys ranked in the top 10 while Lehigh has 4 ranked top 10.

ASU is lead by 2X NCAA champ #1 Zahid Valencia, 184 countered by Lehigh's 2X AA #3 Jordan Kutler, 174.

Here's how I see it:
125: # 5 Paetzell dec over #8 Courtney -- if Courtney wins it would be considered a mild upset +3
133: UR Kramer favored over UR Farro/Lane -- Lane IMO would have the better chance for the win -3
141: UR Crooks favored UR Pomrinca/Moran -- Moran IMO would have the better chance for the win -3
149: UR Hoffman dec UR Maruca +3
157: #9 Humphreys dec #13 Teemer -- Teemer extremely athletic and flexible...will be close +3
165: #6 Shields dec UR Meyer -3
174: #3 Kutler dec #9 Anthony Val -- will be a wide open bout, Kutler too basic and wins his last home dual +3
184: #1 Zahid Val maj dec #17 Weiler -- interesting bout that could get out of hand fast if Weiler goes pure funk -4
197: #13 Fleet dec UR Jakobsen -- Jake must defend from neutral to give himself a chance -3
285: #9 Wood dec #4 Hall -- finally breaks through. +3

ASU 16
Lehigh 15 -- unless someone steps up with a fall

A lot of close ones looking at the numbers. To win the dual, Lehigh probably needs to build a cushion at the lower weights and weather the storm. Dumping wrestlestat rankings into a google spreadsheet...

Code: Select all

ws	Lehigh W-L [RPI] CP	vs ws top 50
------------------------------------
08	Paetzell 13-2 [6] 5	6-2
56	Farro 7-7 [29] 20	4-3
54	Pomrinca 7-6 [38] 33	3-4
24	Hoffman 11-3 [10] 24	5-4
09	Humphreys 14-4 [27] 8	4-4
76	Meyer 6-14 [41] unr	0-14
04	Kutler 15-1 [4] 3	9-1
15	Weiler 12-6 [12] 16	9-5
23	Jakobsen 12-6 [24] 23	5-6
07	Wood 12-4 [21] 8	4-4

Code: Select all

ws	AZ State W-L [RPI] CP	vs ws top 50
------------------------------------
15	Courtney 18-4 [11] 9	5-4
105	Kramer 7-11 [35] unr	3-8
126	Demison 2-12 [59] unr	1-7
54	Maruca 6-9 [40] unr	1-8
15	Teemer 12-5 [8] 19	5-5
06	Shields 17-4 [7] 7	10-4
08	A. Valencia 16-5 [12] 9	8-5
01	Z. Valencia 20-0 [3] 1	12-0
20	Norfleet 10-3 [3] 14	4-4
09	Hall 15-3 [5] 6 8-3
125 - Paetzell needs to win over a close competitor.
133 - I still see Lehigh as favored even though Kramer beat Farro at the journeyman. He also beat a couple of other good wrestlers back in Nov., but hasn't had a good season since then.
141 - Same. Pomrinca has actually had the better season and beat Crooks last year and at this season's journeyman.
149 - As with Paetzell, need Hoffman to match his win over Maruca at Journeyman.
157 - Marquee matchup. It would be a huge win for Humphreys. Teemer's RPI is 8.
165 - Of course Meyer draws State's 2nd. toughest wrestler.
174 - Kutler has to win.
184 - I don't know what you do with Zahid other than survive.
197 - Norfleet's had a good season, but Jake has a fighting chance.
285 - Ditto. I'd love to see JW prevail vs Hall.

Zahid did not wrestle this past weekend and not since a 14-10 win vs Wisman of Mizzou. Not sure of his status but depending on state of the dual and Zahid's health maybe he goes and maybe he doesn't go. They also have UNC on Sunday.

Well, since someone invoke Wrestlestat, they pick Lehigh winning 21-11, and that's with Maruca upsetting Hoffman.

Did they predict penalty points on the Arizona coaches for anything?

I wasn't looking for that, but we've wrestled ASU a few times recently and there've been no penalties that I recall.

Gimp tells me that ESU's Warrior Winter Open has been canceled. That leaves just the Lock Haven tourney as a last chance tourney this weekend.

I see a familiar name listed at 197 for Pennridge - Kyle Gentile.
