Re: Top 10 Lehigh Wrestlers All Time
Was my answer incorrect? Wasn't sure about Frick.......
Re: Top 10 Lehigh Wrestlers All Time
I believe that Frick went to Pope John (NJ)
I recall that when Frick was in high school (not sure what year), he was selected to represent the USA on a team of college wrestlers in a match against a team of touring Russian wrestlers at Grace Hall (I think). Frick got a huge ovation when he was introduced, and a larger cheer when he scored an early takedown against his Russian opponent. Mike lost the (close) match, but made quite an impression. Can anyone confirm, correct, or expand my recollection of this event?
Another trivia question. Burley won the NJ states at 129 in 1978. But he came in third at 122 in 1977. What future Lehigh wrestler (via transfer) was the 122 pound champion that year?

I believe that match was at Muhlenberg summer of '72 so just after HS and just before college. The Soviet was initially announced as a World or OIympic Champ. The place went bananas when he got that opening td. Then we found out it was someone else.TJZ wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 10:53 am I believe that Frick went to Pope John (NJ)

Re: Top 10 Lehigh Wrestlers All Time
The Frick vs USSR bout at Muhlenburg was inthe spring of 1972, April or MAy. They announced the USSR are guy as world champ, and he took Frick down, Then announcer said he was "only" National Champ, And Mike took him down.
A week or two late, at an Olympic Trial Preliminary (at F+M) he was leading NCAA 134 champ Gary Barton 12-0 when he broke an ankle.
Greg Barton was also a wrestler who IMHO should have won the Sullivan in 1988 for winning two gold in flatwater, sprint, kayaking
Honorary Honorary mention, Tom Toggas- 3 time EIWA champ (single time round of 12 I think)
Honorary Honorary Honorary mention Greg Ruth

I agree with the time frame being spring. Duals were in conjunction with a national tour surrounding the World Cup- generally in Toledo back then.
I think Mike got the td against the World champ (so to speak) and lost to the lesser guy!
