Caruso 3rd String?

Post by Mattlaubo » Thu Apr 30, 2020 1:18 pm

Flo recently did a list of All-Time lineups by state. Comprising of a starter, backup and honorable mentions. PA and Oklahoma had some unbelievable teams. NJ All-Time lineup has a bunch of Lehigh Wrestlers. The weight that I had the biggest problem with was 125. Starter was Gene Mills, NCAA (3,4,1,1) and a record of 144-5-1 with 107 career pins. Backup is Joe Dubuque NCAA ( NQ,8,1,1) and 114-18. Honorable Mentions are Caruso and Sebastian Rivera. I could see an argument putting Mills ahead of Caruso, but there is no way you can put Dubuque ahead of Caruso.

Other Lehigh Wrestlers
133 – Darry Burley – Starter
133 – Mike Frick – Honorable Mention behind Nick Suriano – Backup
174 – Jordan Kutler – Honorable Mention behind Chris Campbell – Starter and Glenn Pritzlaff – Backup
HWT – Zach Rey – Honorable Mention behind Mocco – Starter and Baumgartner - Backup

As good as Suriano is, I don't see him beating Frick, who would be too quick for him. IMO.

Caruso should be 1st team, sorry. As a senior, Mills was lights out, but earlier in his career he wrestled too sloppily to beat a guy as sound as Caruso. No way. IMO.

Though this has been a Kutler love-fest of late - and rightfully so, he just didn't place high enough to warrant mention on an all-time team. IMO.

Rey -- agree.

Burley -- agree.

I don't see Frick and Suriono in the same weight class, The 134 class pre 1997(?) translates to 141 today

edit: until Suriano wins a 2nd title, it's no contest.

And don't underthink it either. They added 7 pounds for a reason.

There is no way, or at least not a very convincing way, to rationalize Frick at 134 and Suriano at 133 as being in different weight classes. You can figure it any way you want, interpolate, hypothesize or just make stuff up but it's a 1 lb difference. So to most observers who are not smart enough to understand, it's basically the same weight class.

The weight class 7 lb shift took place about 25 years ago.

Lot of great 133/134 lb wrestlers over these many years. Pound for pound it's the weight class with the best wrestlers.

Let us know what you're smoking up there. It's still the 2nd vs 3rd weight class with roughly the same numbers having been there before and after. I don't remember many dropping to the lower weight after the change. If that were the case, the upper weights would have cleared out. It also came in with a very different weighin time frame.
