As recently as 2012 Princeton was 12th in a 14-team conference. That was a pretty good push; they've also managed to beat Lehigh in two straight duals for the first time since the mid-1930s. Their problem has been depth; they've recruited a handful of top guys but haven't been able to field a solid team top to bottom. Ayres is probably dealing with a limited admit list that Cornell would sniff at but Harvard would love to have.
I don't disagree with anything here. It's just that realistically the EIWA has been a 2 school horse race for about 20 years now. Prior to that is ancient history since most of the wrestlers today were at most still in diapers before that. :-)

The thing about 2017 for me is not so much how well Princeton wrestled but rather the lack of depth that year for Lehigh. Between 157-197, (half our entrants) we managed 1 2nd and 1 8th. Of course 1 was a weight issue. I don't have the time or energy to research it but it must have been quite a while since Lehigh went 4 weight classes with only 1 8th place to show for it. Cornell won that year by about 50.

I guess I don't get your point. It's always going to be easier for a team to break into the Top 2 when one of the previous Top 2 has a bad year. I can tell you exactly when it was that Lehigh went four weight classes with no places -- 2014, when we had four DNPs and only 4.5 points between them. We finished second that year too, with 101.0 points. Not all that long ago.

In 2016 we placed all ten guys, scored 160 points, and still finished second; the highest second-place total ever and one that I didn't think was possible. Was Princeton or anyone else disgraced because they didn't crack the Top 2? It's damn hard to finish in the top two spots, now more than ever, which makes being the best of the rest three years running a pretty notable achievement.

Penn Class of 2026. We won't see them for awhile.

I'm pretty sure I'm not stupid enough to think Penn's recent recruiting has already returned them high in the league. That anyone would feel the need to improve my understanding of that is, well, kinda' weird.

But Penn's recruiting has only been notable since 3 years ago -- before Reina -- and deserves time & respect. On top of that -- for mourners of why we can't get more Top 100's -- one of several answers is right there.

Princeton had not been recruiting well until about 5-6 yrs ago and the results speak for themselves in both recruiting & results.
