Week-End Salvo -Special Early East Coast Edition
Re: Week-End Salvo -Special Early East Coast Edition
Interesting list by Denny & would say Kutler#21 performed to expectations while Darian & Nate Brown at #52 over performed. Jury still out on Wood#10 with Weiler & Karam clearly underperforming their rankings mid teens rankings.
Mays had the greatest potential to overperform in my opinion as he was exciting-hope he is doing well physically.
Humphreys & Paetzell have a nice chance this year to perform above ranking as high AA.

Re: Week-End Salvo -Special Early East Coast Edition
He was a 4x Oregon champ with a high school record of 172-2. He deferred his freshman year and compiled a 25-13 record in eight open tournaments, with 15 bonus wins. A lot of his losses were to Ed Ruth, Jake Dechow, and the like. Still, not what was expected. I have a note that after that he concentrated on academics. Our 184-pounders during what would have been his five years were Hamlin, Diekel, Nate Brown twice, and Gentile; had he developed we certainly could have used him after Hamlin graduated, notwithstanding Brown's accomplishments.

Wasn't there some Though that Beau Fleckman ws the better prospect than Ruppel. Of course Matt was pretty healthy thru his third year and National title, not so Fleckman. Was not, of that era, Epperly possibly top 10 overall? Maybe second 10drd5748 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 9:53 pm Good summaries, led by #1 Frick in '72) and Mark Lieberman in '74 ... Matt Ruppel was Top 5 in '87, as were Coop (trnsf), Letters & Trenge. Everyone agrees they'd like more, while most get why less often. It's never a good idea to obsess about the obvious perennial recruiting kings -- notably IA, PSU, OhSt, OkSt and next up CU.

And Hess. Of Course Napoli's healthiest year was his third year, the year he redshirtedjdalu75 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 9:47 amAlso interesting that during that 11-year span (not counting Coop-Zinck-Frick in 2006) nine other Lehigh wrestlers were AAs, including several multiple times. Suggests that not all HS superstars become college superstars, and some non-HS superstars continue to develop.
No telling what Meys (Guillain-Barre), Milonas (multiple concussions), or Vollaro (two major leg injuries) might have achieved. Suppose I could add Napoli (who reportedly was fortunate to still be competing at the end) to that list.

Hess wasn't on Denny's list. Things would have been a lot different had Hess and Meys anchored the middle of the lineup the way we expected.Richb-3 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 1:34 pmAnd Hess. >>>Meys not in the Top 100
... He was I-M #9) entering his sr year and was unbeaten in NY, completely dominating all season
... I-Mat decided to bitch slap him for a so-so Jr Nationals in Fargo, losing a close bout to an Iowa kid; not feeling well I think he won 4 of 6 bouts. So I-mat dropped him to 67, later 73, as if that's humanly possible for a kid who placed (starting 8th gr): 1st (103), 4th (130), 5th (152), 1st (171) and 1st as sr (189) in NY. Career: 263-8.
... 26 of his 45 total college W's were WBF, incl r/s. Bad at freestyle? Placed 2nd at Univ Nationals

2x Outstanding Wrestler in NY states too. Unbelievable that they dropped him so much for one bad weekend.drd5748 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2020 7:03 pm >>>Meys not in the Top 100

I lost some of your e-mails from that era in a 2010 hard drive crash, so I don't have your 2009 recruiting release. Lehigh's May 27, 2009 release reports Joey Napoli as the #9 overall recruit, but says nothing about Meys having a ranking. He was undefeated his final two years; 45-0 as a senior with 42 falls. And he was a Youtube star; I remember watching him turn a frying pan into a crepe and tearing a deck of cards in half.

>>>Ever since 2017-18 the Penn Quakers have been crushing it in recruiting. Roger Reina’s staff assembled a #13 class in 2018 and backed it up with a #9 class in 2019. While Penn did not get ranked in 2020 (20 lashes, Rajah; "thank you, sir, I'll have another!!"), there's plenty of talent in their incoming class. Three rising seniors have already started what looks to be another strong class in 2021>>>
.... A show of hands as Penn re-joins Cornell & Princeton 'stealing' blue chips with academics to boot -- do you have any suggestions about how to stop them?
.... Fun fact, concerning Leeman-TUrner challenge of keeping up with the Ivies in their 29 years from 1961-1989
23 Ivy A/A medals. A tad more balance back then:
Yale 7
Princeton 6
Cornell 5
Columbia 2
Harvard 2
Penn 1

In the "hard to believe" category -- Gene Nighman, 7th at 142 in 1981, was Cornell's only A/A of the 1980s .... and the 1970s.drd5748 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2020 8:35 pm >>>Ever since 2017-18 the Penn Quakers have been crushing it in recruiting.
