Brancato’s the ten seed at 195 in a weight class with 42 entrants….. Super 32 is crazy at some weights….126 weight class has 158 entrants and 28 seeded wrestlers….

Brancato wrestles kid from Utah, then if he wins gets the 7 seed from Florida…

Update:

Wins his first match then loses in round of 16 to the seven seed from Florida 5-2….

Brancato finishes 2-2 losing to Johnny Miller from PA (Exeter) 5-1

Miller was section 2nd, region DNP last year

Two guys Brancato lost to came in 7th and 8th....Talshahar was seeded 7th and forfeited to unseeded Miller to finish 8th....Miller unseeded finished 7th

A couple of underclassmen NY state champs that were mentioned here a month or so ago had great success at the Super 32 held this past weekend in Greensboro, NC

Freshman PJ Duke, already a 2X NYS champ won the 126 lb title. In the off season, Duke moved from Carmel (Section 1) to Minisink Valley (Section 9) to join Sophomore Zack Ryder, who placed 5th at 152 lbs.

Duke is on track to win an unprecedented 6 state titles while Ryder has placed 2,1,1 so far. Either of these guys, or both, would be nice to recruit. Ryder has grown from 103 as a 7th grader to 152 this year. Nor sure how much more he will grow, but probably safe to say 174 (at least) in college. Duke looks like he will continue to grow as well.

I don't follow the minor states so can you tell all of us how many divisions NY State has?

Both New York and PA have 2 classifications for Wrestling. But for whatever reason, it seems like the smaller classification schools in NY Have fewer students per grade. I assume they can function in Wrestling, and some other sports, because they can all use 8th graders. And if the 7th Graders are in the same building as the seniors, the 7th graders can compete varsity. I know some states allow 6th graders, even 5th graders to compete varsity if in the same school building. ??????

10 years ago very few 7th/8th graders wrestled in NYS high school varsity…. I remember everyone being stunned when Yianni did it…..my older son’s sophomore year in 2012 they had the first 8th grader ever wrestle varsity at his school…. now its commonplace, his former high school had 4 seventh graders start last year…..

A big part of it is an attempt to fill all the weights, which never used to be a problem…… now some of the traditional “powerhouse” schools in western ny are having trouble filling the 15 weights….. i went to a match the last full season before Covid with my son over his break and they wrestled 6 out of 15 weights…..and that is in D1 large school wrestling…..depressing
