Max is certainly becoming a very nice surprise. He finished 8th in NJ in 19-20 and 4th in 20-21. He was the 4th seed last year and finished 4th. He was upset in that he lost to the 9th seed (2-1 in sv) in the SF who had already taken out the #1 seed. Matt Hoelke is now wrestling for Rider and lost to Brignola 12-2 in the 2nd round of the Patriot Open. #3 seed Nathaniel Camiscioli beat him 2-0 in the bout for 3/4. He is 1-3 while wrestling for Navy Prep School.

Max is currently 8-0 and ranked #37 by Wrestlestat but Verkleeren is the only guy he beat ranked in the top 70.

Hope that helps.

Probably just the way he was entered in the tournament; they didn't all get signed up at the same time.

Better question: why was Taylor allowed to wrestle seven times today?
Which is why large tournaments should wrestle to 10 places. Quarter finalists go for 5-8, earlier losers go for 9th.

7 matches in a day is ridiculous (although he did finish with pins in match 6 and 7).

Correct me if I'm wrong but it is not only ridiculous it is also not allowed per NCAA rules correct? Whose job is it to monitor that? The tournament (I assume)? The wrestler? His coach? Are "open" tournaments not held to the same standard?

It worked out pretty well for Nate. 3 Pins, a tech fall and a 6-1 win on the consolation side, with the final pin being over the wrestler who knocked him into the consis.

Interesting about the 7 bouts. I doubt it becomes an issue for Taylor as much as the hosts allowing it.

We used to do that at Trenton State (later TCNJ) Central Jersey Open. Ice had me create a template for that.

In a complete 64 man bracket with full wrestle backs you can lose in the first round, or the second round, and wrestling back to 3rd means 10 bouts
if 3-4 is just the losers of semis, then 5th would be 9 bouts
if also quarter finalists go for 5-6, then 9-10 would be 8 matches.

If 40 in the bracket and Semi losers go for 3-4 and quarter losers 5-8. Then the 9th place bout could be bout 7, But at least that guy's last win would give him10th

In Meet the Fockers, Ben Stiller's character's parents proudly displayed his singlet from when he finished 9th in a wrestling tourney 18 years before. Robert DeNiro, Ben's prospective father in law Said "I didn't think they give trophies that low to which Dad Dustin Hoffman replied " right down to tenth. (Florida I guess)

The issue is that the NCAA has limited wrestlers to six wrestled bouts in one day for three or four years now. The rulebook is silent (for now) about what happens if a wrestler exceeds the limit. That final bout should not have happened; the other guy should have been awarded 5th place by No Contest.

Can't blame the Lehigh staff; Nate was unattached so the school can't get him there or provide coaching.

The ICE Special would allow up to 32 as I remember.

32 man brackets assure those in the 9-10th bout will be in no more than 6th bouts. In fact, if a perfect 32 both those guys will always be their 6th out

With up to 40, it can be the 7th bout, but at least they get the 10th place medal. I guess they could share 9-10 if both did the pigtail.

I guess with 64 men, effectively there could be a 4 way tie for 9-12. If perfect 64, and 3 of the final 4 in that consolation group were eliminated (from championship bracket) in the first 2 rounds, and 1 guy in the third round, that guy advances to 9th with two "no contests"
