My only goal here is to try to balance expectations and hope. Yes, Gaige Garcia is a very talented wrestler. Our room is filled with blue chip wrestlers. At least 8 of them were ranked top 70 in HS. We have no returning AAs. The EIWAs and certainly the NCAA is loaded with talented blue chippers. Gaige may be the only one who hasn't competed on the mat in 3 years, balancing football and wrestling and recovering from a serious injury. All of that gives his competition a serious edge IMO.

I believe Gaige was in the room perhaps in July of last year before football practice began in early August. Assuming that he did beat everyone in and around his weight class, remember that he probably didn't have very much in and around his weight class. JT Davis and Eli Jones are the only other 2 on the roster at 197 and Davis who wrestled 184 the year before was likely still recovering from a serious knee injury incurred in spring. 184 was also really, really light with AJ Burkhart still working his way up from 157 to wrestle there.

Listen, my sincere hope is that Gaige will be a multiple time AA. My expectations though is nowhere near there.
I hope he proves me wrong.

Why didn't he wrestle his one year at Michigan at all? Not even in opens, extra matches etc....

Was he injured that year also from football?

I have no inside information but I can think of several reasons

1.) Covid made the '21 season a mess to begin with. I'm not sure how many outside tournaments they even went to.

2.) Big 10 football typically goes into late Dec-early January depending on bowl games.

3.)The demands of FBS football/wrestling had him already re-considering his choice of school. It looked good on
paper. My fear is that it may look good on paper here too but we are typically done in November.

Just my opinion.

Well was going to be a redshirt year for sure for him as Myles Amine was wrestling at 197 that year for Michigan, Amine came in 3rd at NCAA's that year, with his only loss to Ferrari in the quarters.......but looking at their website a bunch of guys who were the same year as Garcia wrestled extra matches, and so on.....maybe it was because football runs later........

Once they arrive and have had an opportunity to demonstrate their ability --then and only then are their rankings validated. Before that it's all conjecture. Our room, based on actual wins and losses, unfortunately is not loaded with talented blue chippers. As Bill Parcells said: "You are what your record says you are." Unless we can somehow use those high school wins today. Can we?

I used to live in an apartment and the girl downstairs had a pet ferret named "Chipper". But he was brown.

I support Mookie on this one as I think Garcia is a huge question mark if he will ever wrestle & especially after his ankle injury that is more susceptible to reinjury in wrestling than football.

Who is the other person that cost us Casale & would prevent us from going after This Penn State transfer at 197?? What am I missing?

I said a long time ago that I doubted we would ever see Garcia in a wrestling singlet. I'd like to be wrong but he has to get through a full football season every year injury free to be in top form to wrestle. Hardly a barrier to a div. 1 ready 197lb er. Particularly now, with a major injury in his first year.
