Morgan State Revives D1 Wrestling Porgram

Post by Oracle » Mon Aug 15, 2022 11:11 am

Announcement last September and not much since, but today they announced Kenny Monday as head coach. That's quite a statement. The idea is for other HBCU schools to follow suit. This is big news folks. Kenny Monday is about as credentialed as they come. He's run an RTC (North Carolina) so there's no reason to believe recruits won't want to be a part of this initiative. It's always awesome when something out of the blue happens and this is a huge positive.

Good luck to coach Monday.

Morgan State .... I seem to recall a massive guy named Emanuel Yarborough who prevented Lehigh's Bernie Brown from reaching the AA platform in the blood round. Yarbourough was over 400 if memory serves.

At Class of '73 ('Younger Man'), O's memory beats mine; I have no recollection of the Rd12 or the 400 lbs
1978 -158 -6 -Smith, William, Morgan St
1980 -158 -2 -Smith, William, Morgan St
1986 -285 -8 -Yarbrough, Emanuel, Morgan St
1990 -158 -6 -Wynn, Chauncy, Morgan St
It wasn't close (9-1) but EY lost his last 2 bouts by fall; Bernie did much better in the hwt quarters, lost 7-5 to runner-up Heropoulus, ISU, who lost 6-3 final to Trost, MI. Like Brown, both were former 190's; were whipped by Diekel in prior yrs down there. BB had 1 career W vs. Temple hwt champ, Hyman.

Today's hwt is sure not your father's Oldsmobile if Dad drove it in the mid-late '80's

**** Yarborough also did some MMA (weighing in around 5-600) and was not real successful. I recall one match where he went against a karate guy in the neighborhood of 190 and got taken out by a roundhouse kick (pretty much out cold).

I believe the correct spelling is Yarbrough. He was 6'8" and passed away in 2015 from a heart attack. Not sure how the bout went with Bernie; who lost 9-1. Yarbrough pinned or was pinned so the bout with Bernie was an outlier. Too bad, because Bernie had a nice year which included beating Schwab in the Easterns.

Wasn't MSU a DII or III school back in the day?

I remember William Smith -- better known as "Bucky" way back yonder.

It was kept at unl through 1986 to grandfather in Nebraska HWT Gary Albright (runner-up to Tab Thacker in 1984. And possibly others.

Did Morgan St only have 1 runner-up? And 2 or 3 other semifinalists?

Some mention that the only SBCU with D1 wrestling was Morgan St. Delaware St and Howard had had D1 wrestling for years.
