Complex stuff, except that 1969 was the 1st yr freshmen guys were allowed to enter ncaas, except WW II era (Carl Adams told me this); Larry Owings should be in the '69 brackets

But the EIWA didn't allow fr/fr until 1971; Pitt's Randy Payne placed ncaa 2nd in 1970

So Caruso was "just" a fr/fr on the Freshman Team; LBF to Gary Fowler in dual, then WBF in 'Plebe Tourney' held for fr at Army. I attended Mike's sole varsity loss - at Army but up a wt at 130 when O's bro, Pete went 5-0 at 123 before loss vs PSU (EIWA 2 as capt in '68 at 130).

Fred Powell was ncaa 4,1 (jr/sr); rival in video was Gangenstet (sp?) a 1-time 2nd.
No way to know how Mike would have done - even if he did beat ISU's Sebert as soph in Grace Jan '65 (who was ncaa 2 at 115 in '63). By one point. Unlike other LU guys (for example Frick, Burley, Kilrain, Hamlin, M.Brown, Pendleton) Caruso never beat an ncaa champ - partly because he was 3-0 vs Fehrs in finals - never been done before or since.

Burley acknowledged Frick in his seat for most W's vs NCAA 1sts and most 1st/2nds combined. That 2ND one startled me, since I've never researched it -- gonna take a lot of research - it's either him or Gable before 2010 but might be some new guy last decade -- especially since DB 'only' wrestled 100 bouts.

That's why Frick record is amazing (in 99 bouts) - in his 4th bout he beat that yr's sr ncaa 1, Sherman, Iowa
Ed Banach could easily challenge Frick "record" for 1st/2nds w/151 bouts.

Bob Steenlage who defeated Caruso was the first Iowa high school wrestler to win four individual state championships in1962. I was there as well. The bout wasn't close.

Interesting bio on Steenlage. https://www.iowawrestlinghalloffame.com ... -steenlage

Surprised that the kid who beat Caruso and never lost in a dual meet at Army got one 3rd in the Nationals and that's it.

The USA boycotted the 1980 Olympics. That is why Weaver was not a 2-time OGM.

I can use Staunton's Ploys at least as well as Mookie.

Caruso wrestled 115LBS his Senior year. He defeated my team-mate Kenny Carswell, a 1962 New Jersey State Champ from Washington HS, 4-0, in a respectable bout on a foggy night in Newark, NJ. Kenny's "bread n butter" was the barrel-row, or the DUMP as it was referred to,..but Mike had a better one! :D

Direcctly, or indirectly I also rubbed-elbows with two other Lehigh legends, Coaches Jerry Leeman, and Thad Turner. I thought maybe Coach Leeman was in our gym to EYE-BALL me, as I would have loved to have wrestled for the Engineers..so I pin JAY..Leeman(Palisades) in our XMAS tournament finals. WTH,..not even a freakin' phone call! :o

Probably had more to do with Coach Turners P'burg kid upsetting me in our Jersey districts! ;)

Have spoken to both Mike, and Thad on occasion in Grace Hall,..CLASSY gentlemen indeed.

Okay, 1/2NELSON...
P'burg District, Turner was the coach from 1962 to 1970 season.

What HS were you from?

Del Val?
Belvidere?
Hackettstown?
Washington/Warren Hills?
West Morris? (my two older brothers wrestled there during the mid to late 60's)

There were other HS that came & gone during that time, but those 5 where there when I was attending/ watching my brothers in the post season.
THAT time was before placers could qualify (1st allowed were runner-ups to advance to the Regions, then 3rd placers added later on.)
You HAD to win it to advance... you could virtually have the 2 best wrestlers in the entire Region, or STATE coming out of that district.
You lose, you're out of LUCK!

Sir, a pint of you finest ale, please!
Never argue with an idiot... he'll bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Washington/Warren Hills

And your correct,.. due to the format, ONE-N-DONE at the time, numerous 2ND PLACERS in out powerful District very often were 2ND BEST in the state as the fella who beat them at Districts became the eventual State Champ! :(
