LU v Princeton
LU v Princeton
Hadn't seen Mulhauser in Princeton box scores and with the Princeton dual coming up I decided to take a look at their roster. No Mulhauser. He was a big star recruit coming out of N.Y. ... Logan like. He pinned Logan in last year's dual but I think Logan got revenge in the Easterns. Looked him up on wrestlestat and he's listed as "unattached" for this season with a record of 0-0. Maybe he decided he didn't want to have to write that senior thesis after all.
In any event, looking at Princeton's roster I was surprised at how small it is. Not counting Chloe Ayres, it numbers 29. LU has about 1 1/2 times that number.

Mulhauser took the year off. Not enrolled. Typical Ivy gray shirt.
Re: LU v Princeton
I had always thought that greyshirting occurred prior to one's freshman year by sending them to Finger Lakes etc before formally enrolling.. That was the Ivy way around the redshirt ban. Please explain how this situation qualifies as a grey shirt or can you just leave school for a year and come back anytime.
Re: LU v Princeton
I think that’s what CJ Composto did at Penn. Maybe took the year off to heal from injury?
Re: LU v Princeton
Princeton's not having a good year, but they match up well against LU and if Smith goes at 133 it's conceivable that they could win 5 bouts ... 133, 149, 165, 174, 184.
Re: LU v Princeton
Ty Whalen, Kole Mulhauser, and Marc-Anthony McGowan are all taking the year off; McGowan greyshirting. That's a lot of talent not available.
Ivyshirting entered the vernacular about 20 years ago, when a Harvard wrestler (I think it was Robbie Preston) took consecutive fall semesters off to extend his time in college to five years for the purposes of not graduating before his wrestling eligibility expired. Everyone thought it was a weird idea at the time, but it became common practice. John Harmon may have been the first to use the term.
Greyshirting did the same when Mike Grey took a gap year after bailing on his Lehigh commitment a week or two before classes started. Now it just refers to someone who takes a year between high school and college, unusually while wrestling at an RTC.
There's no reason an athlete can't do both. I've referred to that as Grevyshirting but it hasn't caught on.
Princeton lost to Binghamton yesterday and it wasn't particularly close. Not saying we shouldn't take the dual seriously, but the Tigers aren't having a good year.

Re: LU v Princeton
Cornell (and as far as I know, all other Ivy league schools) requires all students (not just athletes) to graduate within the specified time for their degree program (typically 4 years, but 5 in some cases) Officially, there are a couple of ways to take time off - "deferred enrollment" (before enrollment), and "leave of absence" (after initial enrollment). Both of these paths have been used by athletes to adjust or modify their period of eligibility, but important to note - the policies are available to be used by all student. I knew quite a few in my degree program who took a leave after 2 or 3 years just due to burnout.Justafan wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 10:15 amI had always thought that greyshirting occurred prior to one's freshman year by sending them to Finger Lakes etc before formally enrolling.. In addition to this - athletes have 4 years of eligibility under Ivy rules, regardless of degree program (no extension for a 5 year program or graduate work)
I've heard the terms "greyshirt" applied to a deferred enrollment, and "Ivy shirt" applied to a "leave of absence"- but these terms are just colloquial, and not in any official way defined.

Re: LU v Princeton
Expect to see Foca "greyshirt" first semester next year and then wrestle second semester for Cornell......
Re: LU v Princeton
Worth the price of admission Saturday night watching Dubuque's head explode.
