Cornell's strategy
Re: Cornell's strategy
Question is, do many guys punt a year or two of their careers sitting? Remember, Gerald Angelo was a Cornell commit who spend a year at Finger Lakes; he's now at Rutgers.

Cardenas can 'take a year off' if needed. Or transfer.
Re: Cornell's strategy
But why go to Cornell to sit in the stands but get a Cornell degree when one can be a starter for other conference teams and get an Ivy League degree?NothingMeaningful wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 12:29 pmWhile getting a Cornell degree. Cardenas might be the highest ranked recruit to not start in the country. I'm guessing he knew the situation when he accepted. Then again, maybe he can beat Darmstadt (and then you have a (probable) 2xAA who can't make the team).

Cardenas will be a freshman next year, when Darmstadt would have been a senior had he not gotten injured and sat out a year. He committed the summer after Darmstadt's freshman year. At Cornell, he could look forward to at least three years of starting for the best program in the Ivy League and a program with national title goals, rolling around with guys like Gabe Dean and Darmstadt and a monster recruiting class. Or, he could be a four year starter at another school with an inferior program and teammates, which aspires to have a winning record and not get shut out by Cornell or Princeton.
Re: Cornell's strategy
So now he's looking to be a starter for two years, unless he sits out of school for a couple of semesters in order to save his Ivy eligibility. Count the FL year and it takes him six years to get a degree, and he still only starts for three years.NothingMeaningful wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 2:52 pm Cardenas will be a freshman next year, when Darmstadt would have been a senior had he not gotten injured and sat out a year. Just saying, when you stack that much talent that deep, don't be surprised to see some of it move sideways off the bench.

Re: Cornell's strategy
All of those are possibilities. For each guy, they determine their priorities and act accordingly. There are many wrestlers on every decent team who never sniff a start in a dual meet, and that seems to be fine with them. For Cardenas, he'll make the choice that's best for him. Maybe he sees if he can beat Darmstadt: if not, maybe he transfers since sitting for two years is not in his priority list. Maybe he can get a better option in the Ivy League (that'd be funny if he transferred to Princeton and knocked Brucki out his senior year!); maybe he goes to a place like Northwestern (thinking of the better schools with decent wrestling). Maybe he does all this before matriculating at Cornell.jdalu75 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 3:56 pmSo now he's looking to be a starter for two years, unless he sits out of school for a couple of semesters in order to save his Ivy eligibility. Technically there isn't one. It's on The Mat College Wrestling Forum; just page down until you find the Cornell thread.
