Huh?
Cornell Plan
Re: Cornell Plan
I think we had 2-3 NCAA champs under President Likins, and 8-10 under President Lewis. Of Course had we had someone with the attitude of Pres Ghastley, our program would be on a par with Bucknell, if not F+M
Re: Cornell Plan
In spite of Pete's wrestling background, I'm not remembering the 1990s with a great deal of nostalgia.
Of course, remembering anything is a bit of a chore right now

Re: Cornell Plan
Likins was the best. This guy is lemon city.
Re: Cornell Plan
I hadn't forgotten that although real change didn't take place until the Strobel hire just before Likins left.
However this is the reason for angst about the 90s at Lehigh. Somewhere around 1994, Lehigh dropped into the mid 50s inthe US News and World Report, behind Penn State (my real peeve). I met with some in the Administration and discussed it.
In 1975, when you and I graduated, Lehigh was highly ranked due to a reputation of tradition and excellence. Our College of Engineering was in the Top 5 in the country. I believe our wrestling team had just finished #3. The Marching band was considered one of the finest precision marching bands on the East Coast and our Greek system was in a class of it's own.
Less than 2 decades later, we were no longer considered an Engineering school. My most vivid memory of our wrestling program was almost losing to Rider, Brown and Carson Newman in the same day. (We pulled out the last match at the very end). The Marching 97 had 45 members an we were in the process of dismantling the Greek system.
I'm sorry but I'm not remembering that decade fondly at Lehigh although the stock market was great.
Re: Cornell Plan
I believe the scholarships restarted for real in the '92 season. I don't think we would have had a full slate of scholarship kids until Latessa/Strobel.
Re: Cornell Plan
Rick Hepp and Brian Cipollone were the first two scholarship recipients and they arrived in the fall of 1991, so you're correct. I read years later that the faculty never would have approved no-need wrestling scholarships, but there was something about the president taking a ton of heat for scheduling a vote during spring break or some similar period when most of the faculty wasn't there.
Likins was Lehigh's president from 1982 to 1997. He was there for the last of the good Turner years and saw Greg's first two seasons.

Interesting for the historically inclined, I guess.
I'm more interested in the future.
