2021 EIWA Championships (?)

Post by whiz wit » Thu Nov 19, 2020 8:52 am

This question will likely prove to be academic, but since Cornell's season is cancelled, where would next year's championships be held if they are to be held?

What would be the point of an EIWA tournament without the Ivy League?

If it were to be held, with 11 schools, which I doubt, 3 mats could be used. So Army or Navy could hold in Christl or Alumni.

Or of course maybe Cornell could still hold it. Not unprecedented. About 10 years ago, New Oxford HS. Pa, found they had miscounted competitions and could not compete in their own large, late season individual tournament, but held it anyway.

It will not be held at Cornell. May not be held on a college campus.

Why hold it at all? Good question. Maybe the other EIWA schools can't put their athletes' lives on hold for a year, so if they want a shot at wrestling at the 2021 NCAA tournament they need to first wrestle at the 2021 EIWA tournament.

Maybe respect for tradition. The EIWA tournament has never been canceled. Not in World Wars, not for the 1918-19 Spanish flu pandemic, not in the aftermath of 9/11. That makes in unlike the NCAA tournament, which was not held in 1943-45 and 2020. When three member schools didn't wrestle during WW2 things went on without them. When Syracuse and Cornell were snowed in in 1970, same.

It would be a J.V. tournament. No interest at all.

With 6,000 American deaths in 3 days (most of any 3-day stretch in 7 mo), I'm surprised we're debating wrestling at all.

We're discussing wrestling - it's a wrestling board. Plenty of places to go to discuss Covid.
