Nathan Taylor
Re: Nathan Taylor
Took Andy Dufresne 19 years to tunnel through the wall of his cell with his rock hammer.
Re: Nathan Taylor
Good article on Nathan Taylor and his signing with Lehigh

Interesting note from the article. His grandfather is Bill Shufstall, a 2 X All-American at Slippery Rock at 190# (1974 and 1975). I'll let the historians figure out if he wrestled either Greg Strobel or Don McCorkel during those tournaments.

Re: Nathan Taylor
Tied McCorkel in '74 dual McCorkel won 5-3 in '75 dual
Re: Nathan Taylor
Thanks Gimp.
Wrestling McCorkel that close indicates that Taylor may have some genetic toughness in him.
Interestingly, I glanced at the results of the PSAC Tournament in 1974 and it looked like a who's who of District 11 coaches, past and present with names like Steve Powell, Dave Crowell, Don Rohn, Rick Thompson,

Re: Nathan Taylor
1975 was a good year for the Engineers at the NCAA's in Jadwin Gym.
Lieberman beat Chris Campbell in the finals, Mike Frick also won and was Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament, and Terry DeStito finished 5th after a brouhaha in the 5th/6th bout against Avery from Michigan. Engineers finished 5th, and that was without getting a single point from 3 other wrestlers seeded in the top 6 - Lance Leonhardt, Pat Sculley and freshman Mark Lieberman.
I can remember all of that, but I forget what I'm doing when I walk from one side of the room to the other.
Re: Nathan Taylor
1975 was also the year Lehigh had 7 Eastern Champs, 8 Finalists, and 9 placers 3rd and above.
Yes, some underperformed at Nationals but I still think that it was our best team ever but then again, I'm biased.

Re: Nathan Taylor
One of my friends, who had graduated in 1974, said during introductions: "It's Lehigh against the EIWA All-Stars!" Afterwards I told him that, btw, Lehigh had won, and he said "No, they didn't!" and then thought about it a bit.
NCAAs were still limited wrestle-backs, where you had to lose to a semi-finalist in order to get to the consolations. Don McCorkel lost in his pigtail, then sat around for something like 29 hours until Greg Stevens won his quarter-finals bout the next afternoon. Then he wrestled four times in 3-1/2 hours. Beat the 6th and 3rd seeds before he ran out of gas one win short of a medal (for the second year in a row).
Leonhardt won his first-round bout, then lost to unseeded Nick Gallo (NCAA champ at 126 two years later). When Gallo lost LL went home.
Pat Sculley was wrapped up by Dean Dixon's legs; next Dixon beat Dennis Underkoffler. Then Dixon lost and both EIWA wrestlers were eliminated.
Lieberman lost by a point in his first and only bout. Said afterwards that he was thinking about his likely quarterfinals bout. Never made that mistake again.
