GAME !: MONMOUTH

Post by Lehigh65 » Wed Oct 31, 2018 6:34 pm

Eleven months ago, the NCAA approved an “early start” to the 2018-19 Basketball Season. A 3-day head-start (Nov 6 and not Nov 9) didn’t seem like much back then but for those of us who have suffered thru some mighty bad football, the season opener couldn’t come quick enough. So, besides the Champions Classic featuring #13 Michigan State vs. #1 Kansas at 7pm followed by #2 Duke vs. #7 Kansas at 9:30pm - both featured on ESPN, you have neatly placed between the two at 8:30pm the game we’ve been waiting for: Lehigh/Monmouth. For those in the Valley who just can't wait for our home-opener, take the 85-mile jaunt down to the Jersey Shore. Actually, make the OceansFirst Bank Center at 400 Cedar Avenue in West Long Branch. The 8:30 tip means you shouldn’t get caught in commuter traffic. Give a thought. Better yet, give it a try. See for yourself who starts at the "5," Will Cohen own the point? Will Lance live up to the hype? Who'll earn minutes off the bench? Will the 3's continue to our play? Might we see some zone play? Whatever, it should be fun. See you there!

Here’s how the PL gets it going during the opening week of play. The numbers are Kenneth Pomeroy’s. Remember, in reviewing the stats, know that there are 353 D-1 programs competing in 32 conferences. The PL is considered on Day 1 to be the 23rd strongest conference.

On November 6th
LU (187th) PL (23rd)
@
MU (176th) MAAC (18th)
MU wins by 4 (80 to 76) 67% chance

As for the MAAC, get used to it. We’ll soon Marist (Stabler on 11/13) and Siena (away on 11/21). As for Monmouth, it could serve as an early “yardstick” game, with the shore team schedule to travel to Colgate on Nov. 9 and to Bucknell on Dec. 1.

Elsewhere around the League, during on Opening Week……….

Tuesday, November 6th

CU at NJIT
Sacred Heart @ HC
Marist @ Army
BU at Northeastern
Navy at Old Dominion
Loyola @ St. John’s

Wednesday, November 7th

LC @ St.Peter’s
Bucky @ St. Bonny

Friday, November 9th

AU @ George Mason

Sadly, Pomeroy sees only Holy Cross and Army walking away with wins during the opening week of play.

I've check every website I know looking for where the game might be on TV, with no luck... Anybody find a TV venue for the road opener?

No idea about the TV, but last year Bucknell opened at Monmouth and there was coverage on ESPN3/WatchESPN. That is likely your only hope.

This is the Andree homecoming game as he grew up in Monmouth Co. not from from Monmouth Univ. I think he goes off in this one, getting 25+. Is it enough? Probably not. I think Monmouth wins a close one.

I wish the opener wasn’t on a Tuesday.

A question for the mavens. Noticed on the 2 deep in the game notes that Doc's 2s are 3 frosh and 2 sophs. Is that unusual? Or more importantly is that good?

I don't think it's unusual. The two deep is 10 players. Reed seems to run with 12 scholarships. Two upper classmen are hurt so...that's about everybody except walk-ons.
Is it bad? Only if they are not quality players. The freshmen we recruit should be ready to step in early and often.

Just my opinion.

I see LU winning by 6 or more points. Monmouth graduated two really good players plus their late-season starting center. They had a real struggle in their exhibition game the other day, beating a so-so D2 team (Caldwell) by one point.
