Semi OT: RIP Billy Packer

Post by CHIP72 » Fri Jan 27, 2023 2:43 pm

As some of you may have already seen, long-time college basketball announcer Billy Packer died last night (Thursday 1/26) at the age of 82. Though Packer did not play at Lehigh (he was a standout at Wake Forest) and did not announce any Lehigh games to my knowledge, he grew up in Bethlehem and did have a Lehigh tie through his father Tony Packer. The elder Packer was Lehigh's head basketball coach for 16 seasons (1950-51 to 1965-66) and worked in Lehigh's athletic department for 35 years from 1946 to 1981; his last position at Lehigh was as the supervisor of athletic fields and grounds, now known as the Murray Goodman Campus.

RIP Billy Packer.

RIP:

I remember thinking years ago it was too bad he didn't go to LU, or that he never came back to his hometown to coach the Engineers.

In reading his bio, it says his dad, Tony, was inducted into the Hall of Fame at St. Lawrence University -- along with Bill Leckonby, AD when Packer was at LU. Both were class of 1939 at SLU.

Interesting how there are always "connections" among the coaching fraternity that lead to positions.
