Penn State is so far in front of everyone else it's laughable. Even the strongest Iowa teams would have been hard-pressed to match the Nittany Lions firepower this year. With Bartlett now at his best weight, Van Ness living up to expectation and then some, Haines being a legit title threat, and Facundo looking like he's rounding into the kind of form most expected -- this team is stacked. National champs at 133, 174, 184, 197 and a 285 that will challenge for #1. Only 125 (the Curse of Nick Suriano) may not qualify out of the Big 10. The other 9 are relatively strong bets to all medal....probably another 4 champs and all within the top 4/5. Hard to fathom.

A team that not many people are talking about is North Dakota State. IMO, they will be in the top 10 at NCAAs. Their FY 165-- Caliendo is really, really good. They have ranked guys at 7 weights, lead by #2 Franek at 157, #11 Caliendo at 165, #12, Pentz at 197 and #16 March at 149. Coached by former Minnesota AA Roger Kish. They have a similar style: rugged, physically built, dogged in 50/50 positions.

Lehigh's hopes for a top 10 finish rest squarely on Josh Humphreys successful return from injury. If Humphreys is all the way back, both he and Beard are potential big point scorers. Add in trending McGonagle and Saumelsom and there you go. Of course, Hines is also trending and I suspect he is a guy on a mission after hearing a lot of hor$eshit about how lousy he is. Hines is Lehigh's X-factor.

The extra week off prior to EIWAs was a good move by Pat.

Nobody is a better talent evaluator than Cael.

He doesn't miss on too many recruits. Casey Cunningham also deserves a lot of credit for being a savvy recruiter.

>>>>>>>>Cael has missed on a number of recruits———going all the way back to the Alton’s. They are no different from every other program in that regard——- all coaches have plenty of recruiting misses over the years.

The key is bringing in a consistent flow of elite blue chip guys ( from hs or transfer) and the ones that reach their maximum potential become multi-time NCAA champs.

He has no qualms about over recruiting —— hwt for example

The only psu conundrum is the current weakness at 125———- they essentially spotted #5 OhioSt 6 pt lead last night and then almost ran the table —winning the next 8 of 9 incl some bonus wins.

Iowa is a distant 2nd because they don’t recruit as well and their coaching style isn’t as productive.

Interesting thing to me about Penn State is everyone talks about price of college in state tuition versus private in the best wrestling state and so on but only 2 of their starters are from PA (Haines and Starocci) plus their roster shows 33 wrestlers, Lehigh’s shows 41….

>>>>>>>>> There is room to say Cael “missed” on any number of high end PA recruits that left the state for other programs.

Iowa has been the recipient of a ton of PA talent——-with Spence Lee being the best example.

To his benefit, Cael is exceptional at recruiting nationwide———which he had to do when he was at Iowa St as Iowa had the inside track on most Iowa kids.

The real answer? Success breeds success. Once Gable got it going, it couldn't be stopped until he got old. Everyone gets old, even Cael.

Until then, get better.

They could have 6 champs and 9 placers.

And the corollary is mediocrity breeds mediocrity.
