Most Recent EIWA Rankings

Post by FloridaGuy » Wed Feb 22, 2023 10:36 am

>>>>>>>>Team placement points based on Flo’s Feb 21 EIWA rankings:

cu———-—108
Lehigh—-—91
Penn——-—76
Princeton-59
Columbia-57

I know those projected point totals disappoint the Lehigh posters who desperately seem to want Lehigh to finish lower at the EIWAs, but they support my thinking that Lehigh is positioned to finish 2nd.

All this might change based on health, who fills out Lehigh’s lineup, etc, but it’s the current position based on an independent ranking.

On a side note, the rankings have Hines 5th at 141 and Taylor 3rd at 285. I would reverse those rankings but it would not alter Lehigh’s projected point total.

Oh the drama, by posting this you make it sound like there are "all" these people out there predicting worse than 2nd, from looking back I think there was maybe one or two people who predicted that? With most just saying it will be a battle for second with Penn (which it should be) and with Lehigh having an outside chance at title if everything just happens to fall their way......

Update from the EIWA website:

Of course - the only rankings that count for anything are the ones coming out at the end of the week...

The rankings for the Lehigh guys seem pretty reasonable. Taylor and McGonigle are no worse off than if they were at 4 and 2. Hines, same thing - all the top guys are close to each other, it's just a question of who wrestles well that weekend.

Don't recall *anyone* here saying they want Lehigh to finish lower than second, but hey, you do you.

On the Intermat board, wrestleknownothing posted an analysis of ten years of NCAA tournaments to determine the historical points scored for each seed (not for each finish), excluding bonus points.

https://intermatforums.com/topic/1217-n ... ment=27582

Using his data, I find for the current EIWA rankings:

Cornell: 120.75
Lehigh: 102.69
Penn: 100.23
Columbia: 83.03
Princeton: 78.07

So the race for 2/3 and the race for 4/5 would depend on bonus points.

Welcome to silly season.

I promised the guy I wouldn't out him - but he does do a pretty darn good job at a thankless task!

Your calculation is basically and apples to orange comparison.

The analysis you refer to says the avg finish for an NCAA #1 seed is in the 2-3 range———which seems reasonable given the tournament size ( more matches means more chances for an upset) and closeness of top guys at many weights.

The EIWA is a smaller tournament ( half the size of the NCAA bracket) and the #1 EIWA seed is often a step ahead any other guy at the weight.

In a nutshell, the avg finish for an EIWA top seed will not be between 2nd and 3rd.

Per the Flo rankings and the standard placement points, Lehigh is roughly equal distance between cu and Penn.
