Why did Gable really lose to Owings?

Post by Oracle » Sun Apr 16, 2023 6:16 pm

A ton has been written about Owings dropping down from 150 to 142 and publicly challenging Gable’s invincibility; actually saying he would take him out. Gable, it’s been told over and over, let Owings ‘get in busy head.’ Even Gable admits to that.

But IMO it’s all bull$hit.

Gable was always, always bigger and more powerful than his opponents. He would his stamina to seal the deal. But he was a powerful guy, no doubt.

Owings won because he was stronger. Height-wise they are similar. Owings build, to my eye, gave him a leverage advantage. Now, I’ve watched that bout many, many times and at the key moments Owings could finish by brute strength. The fireman’s that took a long time to finish is all the proof anyone needs to accept this theory. Owings just kept digging until Gable folded. No one had ever seen that before in a Gable match and that’s not because Owings was in his head.

This caught my interest after Matt Ramos took out Spencer Lee. Pretty much for the same reason.
