Coal Job, Mine Shaft, Cement Mixer ... they would have all stuck. Don gave his wrestlers the confidence to win, especially in OT matches. Northampton at its peak with him as coach, I never saw so many OT matches go to Northampton. He pretty much told them to shoot in the first 3 seconds and will yourself to win. This was true with the cement series, be prepared to throw it if situation was right. They drilled it a lot in the room.gimpeltf wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 11:41 pm I think he mainly had 1 variation at Hellertown/Saucon. Called it a double-double (or maybe double trouble). Started with an underhook and punch through given his extreme power. Schalles expanded on this at Clarion.
The Cement Job name came when he moved from Hazleton to Northampton. I heartd him say once that if he had stayed longer at Hazleton it would have been called a Coal Job.
If there was any knock on Don as a coach is that too many of his wrestlers were one dimensional and lacked the overall mastery of basic skills to succeed once they went to college. A few emerged, but so many just became average wrestlers.
