2020-21, in general
2020-21, in general
Just opened an e-mail from Joe Sterrett (who may be wishing he'd retired a year ago). The key part:
In very rounded numbers, the impact will require us to reduce the operating budgets in our department by at least 25% for the 20-21 academic year. We still must work through details of the cuts for each program, however earlier this week, I shared with our staff some of the categories of spending that will need to be reduced for the 2020-2021 year. I have listed a few of these below:
• Reductions in our schedules, particularly out of region competitions, and team travel;
• Reductions in spending during break periods;
• Reductions in recruiting travel budgets;
• Reductions in spending on gear, uniforms, office supplies, office services;
• Reductions in event staging costs and wage staff;
• Elimination of all international travel, all consulting or professional services by outside entities, all new imaging or facility improvements, and most of the spending for summer scholarships;
• Elimination or substantially reduced expenditures on food during meetings (a benefit our athletes and graduate assistants will miss most!);
• And in concert with our Patriot League member schools, (all of which are confronting the same kind of athletics budget stresses), there will be changes to championship formats in order to save costs.
The university also has taken prudent actions to address the financial impact of the pandemic on the current financial year (hiring and salary freezes, travel restrictions, and reductions to expenses), and continues to research and evaluate additional options that may be required when we all know more about the 20-21 academic year.

Elsewhere, colleges continue to cut athletic programs, Bowling Green baseball being the last victim I read about.
Scary times in the college world.

Probably best to not Schedule any winter sports competition for November (and I guess Swimming and Hockey compete in October) And all Conference events for after Christmas.

I find it despicable that Lehigh took millions in CARES $$$ that should have been used to help small businesses stay open even though we have $1 B+ endowment. I would have liked them to emulate Harvard and Princeton and hand it back. After all we like to think we're in the same class....maybe not.

Harvard's endowment is $41 billion. Princeton's is $26 billion. Lehigh's is $1.4 billion. Means Lehigh's income from its endowment is about one-thirtieth that of Harvard's. There's a bit of a difference.

Hey, if we can go to Mechanicsburg and Elizabethtown, we can certainly go to Happy Valley!!
Re: 2020-21, in general
I tend to agree. While our endowment pales against Harvard/Princeton, the idea of the CARES Act was to be a lifeline to small businesses. Yes, Lehigh might lose some money this year because of COVID, but we are not in dire straits like many of the truly small businesses whose owners face truly tough times, as opposed to being inconvenienced. There is a big difference.LU808 wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 1:49 pm OPINION OPINION OPINION
