Flow Rankings - Summer

Post by HFO » Thu May 23, 2024 10:54 am

We have 4 ranked in Top 25. We needed the portal. We got squat.

Shouldn’t that post have read that we have 4 ranked in Top 10 & 4 All Americans. Stanich will be our 141 pounder in my mind & get ranked Top 10 because of his grit!!!

Brignola will redshirt IMO & go up to 165 for his last year of eligibility.

Rogers will be a factor at 174 this year!!

Three pre-season AAs, including #1 ranked Crookham @133———-with Stanich not included due to his planned redshirt.

Always room for improvement, but 3AAs plus Rogers via transfer is a far cry from ‘squat’.

Is it though?

The returning guys don't count in the point he was making, we got "squat" in the portal......so that leaves Rogers, he will only be more than "squat" when he has proven it at the D1 level.......Career best win over wrestlestat #47, and attempting to go down 1 1/2 weight classes after two years of college wrestling? Hopeful, but jury definitely still out.......

I don’t agree that we got nothing from the portal as Rogers was a Top 50 recruit.

I personally don’t like one year rentals unless someone like the Penn State guy because he was a great academic fit for his advanced degree. Has he landed at Okie State yet officially.

But labeling him ‘squat’ ————is just silly when he was ranked in the top 15 as a hs recruit, has 3 years of remaining eligibility, and fills a needed weight.

You fully understand my position. Others read their personal bias to recharacterize. On we go.

The jury is definitely still out there on 141 to 184. The permutations of potential lineup are large. Somebody will need to emerge. I am all for Stanich giving it a go at 141, but it is a large jump. McGonagle could not do it. Paetzell could not do it. Carter Bailey #22 wrestlestat made a good transition from 125 to 141 and had success this year. His best wins were #45 Ka Miller NC Maryland and #23 McGonagle his teammate. Hines #30 wrestlestat
So jury is out that Stanich can make the 16 lbs jump and beat both Bailey and Hines or whoever else might emerge of the young ones.

Brignola looks like he can hold down 157 again. Not much to be gained and from what I see nobody on his heels to take the spot. He is Top 20. Could close the gap and be a R12 guy.

So maybe from 141 to 184 somebody emerges that can be EIWA Finalist or NCAA R12 guy, but at this point, it is conjecture. Nobody is really on the board of being in that league of wrestler yet at the college level. Nothing wrong with developing talent, but if your competitors are reloading points for NCAA and that talent is there, you better have a well defined strategy of who you are going to go after when their name appears. I stand by my statement, we got squat. As in 0 accretive points to our 17th place finish.

Squat seems fair to me till proven otherwise......if he isn't able to make the cut to 174, statistically he is about same as what we have in Wilt at 184........and stop relying on high school ranking, this will be his third year in college, not his first or second, and he was at a solid wrestling program.........we held on to that high school record hope too long with other recent recruits.........as I said hopeful, but a lot to prove.....

I'm not convinced that Stanich has guaranteed success at 141. That's a helluva jump. Crookham at 141, Stanch at 133, yes, but I don't think Ryan is moving. We are still log jammed in the lower weights and making a sacrificial lamb out of an all American doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Unless his growth warrants it.
